On Your Mark, Get Set…. GO!

The Automotive X Prize (AXP), a not-for-profit organization has raised $10 million dollars as prize money for a scientific experiment for people who can deliver a fully functional car that has all the standard features to break in to the auto industry like signals, mirrors, wipers, a/c, etc., and get 100mpg.

2009 in the U.S.

The competition finals will be held in 2009, with races in a number of U.S. cities under differing weather conditions, to find a legitimate, practical passenger vehicle that could be taken on by a major manufacturer for mass production to the public. The idea was inspired by a similar challenge offered to the first person to cross the Atlantic, New York to Paris or vice versa for a prize of $25,000 which was won by Charles Lindbergh (best-known aviator in modern history) in 1927.

A number of cars are already being considered contenders; the Alé, a car that runs on fuel vapors, the Tesla roadster, an all electric car and the Aptera, a 2-seat plug-in hybrid that looks half car half airplane.
