The four wheel drive double cab pickup becoming the official Dakar Rally Support Vehicle shouldn’t come as a surprise. The new turbo diesel VW is being produced at the Pacheco plant in Argentina. Argentina coincidently happens to be home of the 9000km all terrain race that covers mountains and deserts through Argentina and Chile.

2010 Launch

Volkswagen had announced earlier this year they intend to launch the new platform in South America early in 2010, followed by the U.S. and Canada in spring 2010.
35 units will be supplied to the organizers of the event. 20 will provide race support and 15 will be used to transport the press around.

“We are pleased to be able to use the Volkswagen Amarok as our Support Vehicle, because the Dakar Rally demands the highest levels of technical perfection, reliability and endurance and our race Touaregs,” said Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director. “The Amarok is exactly the right vehicle for our team.”
