Final Big Block Rolls Out off GM Tonawanda Plant

L18 Done, Along With Another 150 of obamas’ Employees

Retirees and the employees lucky enough to still have their jobs, gathered round for the nostalgic moment that last L18 big block rolled off the line last Friday. The big block was featured in the Corvette, Impala, and Camaro among others in the ‘old’ GM line-up, but the sentence was delivered back in June when the ‘new’ Government Motors announced their plans to eliminate the V8.

As Willie Ray Jr. walked the last engine off the line, those gathered to mark the occasion took the opportunity to sign the final block and huddle around for a final photo before the powerplant was carted off to the GM Heritage Center in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

Along with the motor, 150 employees from the Tonawanda facility were also eliminated taking the total to 298, just a week before Christmas. The laid-off workers will receive 70% of their pay through unemployment and some supplemental benefits, but I’m sure they would rather have their jobs. Those remaining employed at the plant will continue to produce the L850, inline-four’s, and inline-five’s other vehicles in the GM line-up.
So will these jobs be subtracted from obama’s ‘saved or created jobs’?
