Andriod 2.0 Platform

You’ve most likely seen some of the ‘iDont’ advertising for the new Droid phone, well today the Verizon backed phone grabs a little more publicity from the Google press release to offer a new improved FREE Google Maps Navigation for mobile Android 2.0 devices.

The device will offer all the standard features you’d expect from a state-of-the-art GPS navigation system, 3D maps, turn-by-turn voice guidance, voice search, etc., but then goes a step further by offering other services usually reserved for subscriber induced fees, at no charge.

“Mobile platforms–Android and others–are so powerful now that you can build client apps that can do magical things connected to the cloud,” said Google CEO Eric Schmidt in a briefing for reporters at Google’s headquarters

Upgraded GPS Navigation for FREE

The Google Maps Navigation for Mobile will offer the most up-to-date maps and business listing instantly without the need to fork out your money for upgraded maps, you’ll be able to initiate searches through voice commands by simply holding down the search button while giving an address or location.
Another feature normally reserved for those willing to part with a little extra cash is the Traffic View, a traffic alert application that provides real time traffic alerts that may affect your journey. The Google Maps Navigation will display an indicator light in the corner of the screen, green, yellow, or red depending on the severity of the condition, and you will have the option continue or have the system determine an alternate route.

Yes, the Google Project Manager is a little robotic here, but let’s be honest I don’t think Google are filling his pockets with large sums of money for his presentation skills, but rather his ability to deliver one of the most ingenious apps for a cell phone that has ever been developed. The video clip is nearly 7 minutes long and could have been reduced to half that by highlighting the coolest features, however, some of the features are outstanding and well worth watching the entire clip for.

Don’t be surprised to see unemployment rates rise as a direct result of this product. Sorry Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan employees. (At least they will be able to get directions to the nearest unemployment office for free – “Navigate Unemployment Place”)
