Travis Pastrana Lands New Years Eve World Record w/Video

Takes Title from Team-mate Ken Block

Travis Pastrana, 26 year old extreme sports junkie, had the perfect start to 2010 by pulling off a record breaking jump in his Subaru rally car from Pine St. Pier in Long Beach, California to a ramped barge 250-or-so-feet out in the harbor. ‘Official’ measurements seem to be coming in anywhere from 268 to 272-feet, either way the new record smashes team-mate Ken Blocks previous record of 171-ft set back in 2006 by approximately 100-ft.
Pastrana milked the 20,000+ crowd for all they were worth, starting off with a warm-up teaser run down the 1000-ft run to the launch ramp,he then backed up and unleashed the car down the runway one more time, reaching a top speed of 90mph and shot through the air in the perfect jump. I have to say, the Subaru looked pretty sweet floating through the air, and while control after the landing was kind of ugly due to the dew that had coated the landing ramp, the actual landing was perfect.

“The flight was awesome, I couldn’t have asked for anything better.” Pastrana said, “There’s a 40-foot window where I wasn’t going to break or die, and I hit it right in the middle.”

Had Travis been able to control the landing, and not crash into the fence at the end of the barge, he planned to celebrate with donuts, but seeing as how that was no longer an option he squeezed out of the Red Bull Impreza and celebrated with a back flip off the landing ramp in to the frigid waters below, and unlike the ’99 X-Games where he jumped his motorbike into the Frisco bay in celebration consequently losing his gold medal and prize money, this dip was well-received.
